Godfrey was a farmer who resided in Garrettsville Precinct in Meade County, Kentucky, where he was enumerated in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. He married Julia Ann Abell on April 23, 1837, at Saint Thomas Catholic Church, near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. In his earlier years he was a parishioner of that church, but after removing to Meade County he was a parishioner of St Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Flaherty.
