Former Waseca Man In Train Accident Monday Near Steele, N. D.
Roy Middaugh of this city was notified last Monday of the death of his uncle, Harry Middaugh, in a train wreck near Steele, N. D. Mr. Middaugh was a veteran engineer on the Northern Pacific Railway and was pulling the crack "North Coast Limited" when his engine and two baggage cars left the track, due to a broken rail. The fireman saved himself by jumping. A press report of the accident stated that Middaugh had closed the throttle, thrown on the air brakes and opened the cab window before he was killed. Escaping steam scalded the body.
Harry Middaugh was born in Waseca county in 1873, spent his boyhood here and was well and favorably known in the community. He began firing on the Northern Pacific in 1890 and was given an engineer's run in 1901. He made his home in Jamestown, N. D., and is survived by his widow and one son, who is a student in the Jamestown high school. His mother, Mrs. Orie Middaugh, and a brother and sister, C. A. Middaugh and Mrs. Percy Smith, live in Minneapolis, another brother, Luther Middaugh lives at Mandan, N. D., and a sister, Mrs. Clement, lives in Alberta, Canada. His last visit to Waseca was three years ago.
