Waupun, Wisconsin, newspaper, 1902. "Terrible and Fatal Wreck"

On Saturday evening, Feb. 22, 1902, happened one of the worst collisions for years on the Ashland Division of the C. & N. W. R'y at Summit Lake, 16 miles north of Antigo, in which Brakeman Roy W. [Wood] Middaugh of train No. 189, fast freight, bound north, and Brakeman Wm. Lyon and Fireman Bert. Nightser of way freight No. 50, south bound, were instantly killed. Both trains were running at a high rate of speed and met on a reverse curve in a deep cut, where it was impossible to see each other 500 feet. Both engines and all but three cars of both trains were totally demolished. Steam wreckers were ordered at once from South Kaukauna and Ironwood, Mich., and arrived at the wreck at 1 o'clock A. M., each working from respective ends of the wreck, and worked twelve hours before trains could pass.

The remains of Brakeman Roy W. Middaugh, formerly of Waseca, Minn., whose parents now reside at Hayward, Wis., were brought to Waupun Tuesday, accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. [Richard Myron] Middaugh, his sisters, Angie [Angeline Burlingame] of Mankato, Minn., and Mrs. G. E. [Ethel Estella] Clement of Winona, Minn., his brothers, L. B. [Luther Bixby] of Antigo, C. A. [Clarence Arista] of Waseca, Minn., and H. W. [Harold Walker] of Jamestown, N. D. The funeral was held at the residence of Mrs. Angie Wilcox, aunt of deceased, Wednesday afternoon, attended by many friends and nearly all the sorrowing relatives, including Grandma Middaugh. Internment was in Forest Mound Cemetery, where he was laid to rest in the family lot. Roy, as he was known among his fellow workmen, was a bright young man, 25 years of age, honest and upright, a general favorite with all who chanced to meet him-from officials down. He was a member of Co. K, 12th Regt., Minn. Vol., during the late Spanish-American War, enlisting from Waseca, Minn., April 7, 1898, and was honorably discharged at New Ulm, Minn., Nov. 6, 1898, with his regiment.
