SAMUEL WINTON'S LONG LIFE ENDED

Old and Well-Known Ithacan had been Ill for Long Time
In Business Here 50 Years
Came to This City in 1836- For Many Years a Leading Merchant –
Always a Steadfast Democrat – was Formerly Director of Tompkins County Bank

Samuel H. Winton one of the oldest and best known business men of Ithaca died this morning after a long illness.

For more than half a century Mr. Winton was engaged in business in this city and was one of the foremost merchants of his time. Always generous and kind to everyone he made many friends and his death will be mourned by a large circle not only in the city but throughout the county.

Samuel Hinman Winton was born in the town of Catherine, Schuyler county, October 17, 1817. Both the paternal and maternal ancestors were from Connecticut and were of Scotch descent. He received his early education in the common schools.

At the age of 18 he came to Ithaca and hired out as a clerk in the store of Mack and Ferris. At that early age he showed his adaptability for business and soon became the most trusted clerk in the store. He remained there five years and in 1841 he went in partnership with F.M. Camp and the firm of Camp and Winton dealers in dry goods existed for seven years. Mr. Camp died in 1848 and Mr. Winton alone conducted the business very successfully for nine years.

About this time he became interested in the lumber business in Canada. His first experience in the wholesale trade was in the firm of Winton, Delano & Co. This firm existed for three years, then became Winton & Grant. It again changed with the death of Mr. Grant and the succession of D.B. Stewart to Mr. Grant's interest.

In 1889 Mr. Winton sold his interest to Mr. Stewart and retired from business. He was for many years a director of the Tompkins county bank and was a member of the Democratic party.

In 1845 he married Caroline A. Ackley of this city. She died in 1883 leaving two children Mrs. Fred W. Brooks and Henry A. Winton. The funeral will be held Thursday at 4 o'clock from the late home of the deceased in North Cayuga street.
