Deacon Ben Odom, 87, died Friday at Nightingale Nursing Home after a long illness. The Bulloch County native was chairman of the Board of Deacons at Thomas Grove Baptist Church for over 40 years. He was a charter member of the Bulloch County Branch of the NAACP; a former president of the Friendly Club; an Army veteran of World War II; former executive board chairman of the Pilgrim Baptist Association; and a Mason.
Survivors are his wife, Marie Odom, Statesboro; a son, Bennie Raymond, Boston, Mass.; a stepson, Johnny Collins, Fort Pierce, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Loretta Collins, New York City; a sister, Annie Mae Parton, Savannah; and a brother, Ernest Odom, Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Thomas Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. F.L. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
