John Estes was the son of Abraham Estes and Margaret McCormack who were married Dec. 31, 1789. Abraham was born in Amelia County, Va., and later moved with his father to Halifax County. The family moved again to the Holston River and from there the frontiers of Kentucky in 1779 or early part of 1780. In 1785, Abraham Estes received a military grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia of 1,000 acres on Green River and Pine Lick Creek. His name appears on the list of Revolutionary War soldiers, along with the Logans, Carpenters, his wife Margaret's relatives the McCormick's on a bronze plaque at the Stanford Court House. Abraham and his son John are buried at the old Estes Graveyard on Green River near the mouth of Pine Lick Creek.

Margaret died before 21 September 1809 when her father's will was written.
