To The News:

BARTLETT. TEX., Aug. 2, 1891: In reply to your request I will say I was born the 25th of October, 1823. I was born in Austin County on the east bank of the Brazos River about twelve miles above San Felipe. My father was a member of Austin's first colony. I was principally raised in Washington County, but have been a citizen of Bell County since 1855. I served with Somerveil in the Mexican War of 1842, and also served eighteen months in the Civil War. I have been engaged in farming and stock raising all my life and am still farming. I was married to Miss R. E. Allen in 1851, and she is still living. She was also born in Texas Oct. 4, 1837.
Though I have never been a very stout man, were it absolutely necessary, I presume I could ride all day on horseback now. I have been a member of the Methodist Church for thirty-seven years and a Mason for thirty-eight years. I have five children living and three dead; all those living are married. My father's name was Daniel Gilleland and was a native of Tennessee. As I cannot crowd my buffalo, deer or bear hunts in so small a space, I shall not attempt a more minute biography. The above you are at liberty to use in any honorable way.
