Frederick Massey Witherspoon, 55, passed away at his home 141A North Dargan street early Sunday morning after being an invalid for the past six years. ("Spinal cord hemorrhage; paraplegia waist down..." SC Death Certificate #1941-4233) He was a native of Timmonsville, the son of the late Robert Davis Witherspoon and Ellen Mary Cox Witherspoon.
Mr. Witherspoon was a contractor by trade until his health failed. He had lived here for over 25 years and was well known and had many friends. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
The funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Father W.A. Tobin will say the Requiem Mass. The committal service and the interment will be at Mount Hope cemetery. The ladies of St. Anthony's church choir will sing the hymns. The body will remain at the Waters Funeral Home until the hour of service Tuesday morning.
Those who will serve as active pallbearers will be R. Ben Fulton, Dr. L.B. Salters, Mike Shia, Dr. W.L. Teal, Mike Ateyeh, and Albert Taylor.
The following will serve as honorary escort: J.L. Ward, Dr. E.M. Allen, Sr., A.A. Wilson, Geo. Mansour, Willie Nofal, Dr. M.M. Morse, N. Abdelnor, T.L. Seymour, O.S. Aiken, H.T. Griffin, Mike Nofal, Mike Saleeby, and O.M. Pate.
Mr. Witherspoon is survived by his wife, the former Miss Louise Buchheit of Florence, by one daughter, Mrs. Susie Ward, and by one son, Charles Frederick Witherspoon, both of Florence, by two sisters, Mrs. T.J. Jolly of Hartsville and Mrs. Helen Byrd of Florence. He is also survived by one brother, J.E. Witherspoon and by one grandson, Charles Frederick Ward, both of Florence. He was the son-in-law of Mrs. S.J. Buchheit of Florence. Bob Witherspoon, a brother, died Aug. 4th., 1939. (Florence Morning News, Florence, SC, Monday, 31 March 1941)
