Mother: Dorothea Caroline (John) Mogensen: born in Frederikesberg, Copenhagen, Denmark on 20 Apr 1848 to Johan Gotfred John and Caroline Emilie (Reiersen) John. She was one of seven children. Dorothea married Sophus Florentinus Mogensen at Bronshoj, Copenhangen, Denmark on 6 June 1869. The first of their eleven children was born in September 1870 at Eureka, Humboldt County, California.

The children of Dorothea and Sophus Mogensen included, Flora G. Mogensen, Ida E. Mogensen, Dora Elizabeth Mogensen, Agnes Mogensen, Frank William Mogensen, Henry Mogensen, George Edward Mogensen, Walter Joachim Mogensen, Fredrick Mogensen, Edna Mogensen and Clara Mogensen.

Dorothea died 3 Apr 1915 in Eureka, Humboldt County, California.

The Humboldt Standard ran this story on 5 April 1914:

"MRS. MOGENSEN IS SUMMONED
"At the family home, 580 Summer street, Saturday evening, Caroline Mogensen, wife of Capt. S. F. Mogensen, a resident of this city for nearly a half-century, passed away after a severe illness. Mrs. Mogensen was a native of Denmark, aged about 67 years, and besides her husband leaves the following children: Mrs. H. E. Heckman of Haywards [sic], Mrs. C. Knudsen of Ferndale, Mrs. W. C. Hodges of Eureka, Walter Mogensen of New York, Fred Mogensen of San Francisco and Frank W. Mogensen of Eureka.

"The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home. Rev. Ogg of the First Congregational church, officiating, with interment at Myrtle Grove cemetery."

An obituary appeared in the Humboldt Standard on 5 April 1915:

MOGENSEN-In Eureka on April 3, 1915, Caroline Mogensen, beloved wife of Captain S. F. Mogensen of this city, and loved mother of Mrs. H. E. Heckman of Hawards [sic] Calif, Walter Mogensen of New York, Fred Mogensen of San Francisco, Mrs. C. Knudsen, Ferndale, Calif., Mrs. W. C. Hodges and Frank Mogensen of this city; a native of Denmark, aged 67 years.

"Friends and acquaintences are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Tuesday, April 6, 1915, at 2 o'clock p.m. from the family residence, No. 580 Summer street, Eureka, Calif., Rev. W. D. Ogg of the Congregational church officiating. Interment at Myrtle Grove cemetery."


The funeral notice appeared in the Humboldt Standard, 7 April 1915:

"MOGENSEN FUNERAL"

"The funeral of Mrs. Caroline Mogensen, held yesterday afternoon from the home at 580 Summer street, was attended by a large concourse of friends of the well known old-time family. Religious services were conducted by the Rev. Ogg of the First Congregational chruch. Interment was at Myrtle Grove cemetery. The pallbearers were Jos. Garibaldi, J. Thorpe, Fred Freeman, Thos. Johnson, M. Murphy and Con O'Connor."

The headstone also includes inscriptions for several of the children:

Henry Mogensen: born 18 May 1879 in Eureka, anad who died 23 Oct 1903 in Waldeck Sanitarium, San Francisco, California. He had been suffering from tuberculosis. He was a member of Eureka Aerie of Eagles, a.k.a. the Fraternal Oder of Eagles, Eureka Aerie. No. 130. The funeral was under the auspices of that organization.

Edward Mogensen: born George Edward Mogensen in May 1881 in Eureka and who died 11 Dec 1904 in San Francisco, California when he fell into the hatchway of the British bark "Cariton," where he had been working as a ship's carpenter.

Father, Sophus Florentinus Mogensen: born March 1844 in Denmark to William Joachim Mogensen and Antonette (Wahl) Mogensen. He was probably born in Copenhagen, the place where his parents had married a few years before. Known as Capt. Sophus F. Mogensen, he worked as a boatman and ship's carpenter. He was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in Eureka on 8 Sep 1877.

Alfred E. Mogensen: born Sep 1886 in Eureka. He died 29 July 1922.
