Nannie was the daughter of Col. Joseph Martin and Elizabeth Ward, a granddaughter of Cherokee Peacemaker and Beloved Woman, Nancy Ward, first wife of Michael Hildebrand. She died just before the Hildebrand house was finished. After her passing, Michael married Lucy Absher Whitson, the widow of Joseph Whitson who had been the stonemason for the house. After her husband's death, Lucy had lived in the house with Michael and Nannie as a nurse for the ailing Nannie.

Nannie and Michael had 8 children listed in the 1835 census, and 4 more later: Elizabeth, John, Jennie, Peggy, Delilah, Eliza, Stephen, Rachel, Nannie, Joe, Brice and Mary. The 1840 shows 8 slaves in addition to children and parents. The 8 year old in the household with Michael and Lucy in the 1850 Polk census is said to be a son of Lucy's daughter, Nancy (with first husband Whitson.) Nancy was first married to Joseph Martin Hildebrand, then left son Michael with his grandparents and 'eloped' with James H. McDuffee.

No paper proof of Nannie's burial place has been found, but since she lived near the Hildebrand house while it was being built when she died, and they had a long established cemetery in the back yard, it is almost certain she is interred here. There are no longer any legible markers, most having been lost during cultivation of the land over the years.
