Mamie was the 4th daughter and 6th child of Thomas Jefferson Coffee and Louella (Christian) Coffee. Through her mother, Mamie was a member of the Chickasaw Nation with Dawes Enrollment No. 3049.

She married Jerome Kirby Shaw on November 14, 1922 in Marshall County, Oklahoma. They had four children: Jerome, Mary, Allison and Dorothy.
