Mrs. Hammel earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1945 and a teaching certificate from San Diego State University in California in 1971. She was a caseworker for the USO in New York, NY, from 1945 to 1947 and was a secretary in the school of agriculture at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1947-48. After her husband's retirement, the couple moved to Elletsville, where she volunteered as a docent at McCormick's Creek State Park and studied piano at Indiana University.
She was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Dormont, PA, to Charles Glen and Hilda Bainton King. She married Harold Theodore "Ted" Hammel, of Huntington, on Dec. 28, 1948, at Riverside Church, New York, NY. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 2005.
Survivors include two daughters, Nannette Hammel Stump, of Evansville, and Heidi Hammel, of Media, PA; two grandchildren, Tara Dawn Maikranz, of Beaver Dam, KY, and Reggie Justin Stump, of San Francisco, CA; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Drive, Huntington, IN 46750.
