Gowing up in the small farming towns of Northeast Texas, Dorothy loved reading and learning, completing high school at the young age of 15. She then went to college in Commerce, Texas, finishing with a teaching certificate which served her well for the next 40 years. She married Zifton Clark and taught in East Texas while he was in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Upon his return, she taught in East Texas, also earning her Master's in Teaching, while her husband earned his teaching degree.
For the next 40 years, Dorothy taught in elementary schools throughout east, central and south Texas, settling in Lake Worth, Texas, after the death of her first husband. She became a guidance counselor at several schools in the Eagle Mountain-Saganaw School District until she retired about 1984.
Dorothy remarried in 1982 to Earnest Hix, whom she had actually known in North Texas during childhood. They lived a long and happy life at Cedar Creek Lake, southeast of Dallas, for twenty years. After the death of Mr. Hix, Dorothy moved to Alexandria, to be near her only grandson, Zif Clark, where she enjoyed watching him grow up.
Dorothy was active in community clubs in Texas, as well as Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority in Fort Worth and Mabank, Texas. She was a lifelong Methodist, belonging to Payne Springs Methodist Church near the lake in Texas. She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexandria, and was an active part of the Joy Sunday School Class.
Dorothy was talented in sewing, quilting, painting, and many other artistic pursuits. She remained an avid reader until her death.
Dorothy is predeceased by her parents, James and Lucille Beavers; her two husbands, Zifton Clark and Earnest Hix; one brother, Jimmy Beavers; and one son, Stephen Zifton Clark.
