Funeral services for Mr. Floyd Adams, Jr., age 82, of Centerville are set for 10 AM, Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville. Rev. Mike Midkiff will officiate and burial will follow in the Concord Cemetery west of Centerville. Visitation for Mr. Adams will run from 2 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM. Floyd Adams, Jr. was born on August 18, 1928 in Groesbeck, Texas to Floyd, Sr. and Edna (Andrews) Adams. He was the oldest of five children. In 1951, he graduated from the Texas Department of Public Safety school for Highway Patrol. He was assigned to the Houston area as a DPS trooper. From 1952 through 1953, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. 1953 through 1961, he was assigned to Madison and Leon counties as the first DPS patrolman in those counties. 1961 through 1965, Floyd served as Sheriff of Madison County and 1965 through 1979, he worked for the Texas Department of Corrections and retired as Assistant Warden in Brazoria to Centerville where, from !979 through 1997, he was a Deputy for the Leon County Sheriff's Department, retiring as Chief Deputy. He was a lifetime member of the Sheriff's Association of Texas and served in Law enforcement for over 50 years. Floyd was a Master Mason and a Shriner. He had just been presented with his 50 year membership pin from the Madisonville Masonic Lodge # 740. Floyd was a member of the Madisonville Lodge and of the Centerville Masonic Lodge #1291. He was a past Worthy Patron of the Madisonville O.E.S. Lodge #193. He was a member of the Madisonville First Baptist Church. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents. He died at his home on July 3, 2011. His surviving family includes his wife, Hilda (Midkiff) Adams of Centerville; sons, John T. Adams and his wife, Teena, of Centerville and Jimmy Adams of Pearland; grandchildren, Terry Duque and his wife, Cassie, of Sugar Land, Clint Adams and his wife, Heather, of Centerville, Cody Adams of Pearland, Courtney Adams of Pearland and Colton Adams of Centerville; great grandchildren, Paris, Brady and two on the way; brother, Don Adams and his wife, Jean, of College Station; sisters, Georgie LeNoir of Groesbeck, Dorothy McPhearson of Waco and Peggy Cline and her husband, Sonny, of Waco as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Floyd Adams family also includes some very special friends, Brian Stafford, Dorothy Murff, Sharon Williams and Jeanelle Mathis and Family. Serving as pallbearers are Mitch Netterville, Clint McRee, Tim Boyd, Mike Guerin, Brian Stafford and Randy Ellis. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations and memorials be made to the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 340, Centerville, Texas 75833 or to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 W. 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803. Walters Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
