John A. Price, age 84, longtime resident of Corrales, NM, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 18, 2007.
Born in Wyoming, Johnny attended high school in Kansas. Johnny met Barbara, a pretty fellow NYA radio school student, whom he later married after returning from serving in the 8th Air Force 352nd Fighter Group in England during World War II.
Johnny then graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with a BS in Chemistry and went to work maintaining radio equipment with the Kansas Highway Patrol. In 1953, Sandia Corporation recruited Johnny to join the future National Laboratory, where he eventually worked on nuclear testing operations, including operation Teapot at the Nevada Test Site and operation Redwing in the Bikini Islands.
Johnny left Sandia to participate in the cutting-edge medical research at the Lovelace Foundation. Johnny was part of the Lovelace team that tested the Apollo 13 astronauts. Johnny also worked on some of the first defibrillators and the Resusci Ann manikin used for resuscitation and CPR training. Johnny retired after 29 years of working for Lovelace Medical Center as head of the Bio Medical Electronics Department.
A longtime amateur radio operator, Johnny used his radio expertise to connect donated corneas with recipients in a timely manner through the Lion's Eye Bank network. Johnny also provided communication support for search and rescue operations and various sporting events including bicycle racing, horse trials and SCCA autocross racing. Johnny was devoted to youth ministry and passionately served as a youth leader through the Methodist church in the MYF and lay witness missions. Johnny was a charter member of the Paradise Hills United Methodist Church, where he was later elected a John Wesley Fellow. Johnny served as a scoutmaster for many years, eventually earning his wood badge. Johnny also shared many weekend camping adventures with his own three children Curtis, Dede and Timothy. Dr. Carol Rymer Davis introduced Johnny to the world of ballooning, and Johnny soon became an avid ballooning enthusiast, faithfully chasing balloons for John and Carol Davis for over 30 years.
Johnny lived a long, active life, always involved and helping others, from saving lives through medical research to helping his granddaughter work on classic cars. His wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters will miss him greatly. Memorial Services to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, November 23, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Paradise Hills United Methodist Church, 4700 Paradise Boulevard,NW, Albuquerque, NM. Johnny will be inurned at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM.
