William V. "Bill" Grootonk-

The Grootonk family was in a major car accident when a street car hit their car and drug them 225 feet in March of 1937. The accident had occurred on Mission BLVD in California.

Matilda his sister passed away a little after the accident took place. She was only 9 years old. William V. Grootonk Sr., Bill's father was suffering from Spinal Cord injuries and passed away not long after her. William V. Grootonk Jr., himself incurred a fracture skull (per newspaper article). William Jr. was only 10 years at the time of the accident.

William V., 65, passed away Friday Aug. 25, 1995 due to chemotherapy complications. A San Diego native, he was a decorated Master Sergeant who served in the Korean War, after which he spent his life in the construction industry including acting as Congregational District Delegate in the 1992 Democratic National Convention. Until Bill's retirement in 1993 he served as a special representative for the Southern California District Council of Carpenters Local +1506. He is survived by his loving wife Cindy, 5 children Bill of Leucadia, Naydyne Hinkle of Escondido, Diana Grootonk of Huntington Beach, Lynette Hulsey of Chula Vista, and Dawn Nicholas of San Diego, 8 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The family deeply extends their warmest appreciation and thanks to all of Bill's long time friends. Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 29th at El Cajon Mortuary, 684 South Mollison, El Cajon. In lieu of flowers donations accepted at Valle de Oro Bank, c/o the William V. Grootonk Memorial Fund.
