Luz Esperanza "Lucy" Calvillo went to heaven to be with our Lord on January 25th, 2020.
She was born to William V. and Ygnacia (Aza) Grootonk on April 29th, 1934 in San Diego, San Diego County, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Enrique V. Calvillo of 48 years, daughter Maria Y. Calvillo - Schmidt (Chris), son Guellermo Enrique "William or Bill" Calvillo and step son Enrique Vicente Leal Calvillo. She is also preceded in death by her brothers William V. "Bill" and Rudolph A. "Rudy" Grootonk, sisters Matilda Eliza "Tillie" (she died in the 1937 street car accident), Gloria M. Torres and Rose M. "Rosie" Snider.

Lucy is survived by her children, Beatriz E (Joe) Nieto of Texas, Cynthia E (Rodney) Fretwell of California, Rafael and Guadalupe (Peguero) of California and Anna M. Calvillo with friend Sandy Breneman of Pennsylvania and step daughter Carmen Leal Calvillo of Mexico. Along with 11 grandchildren, 21 and one on the way great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

So the heaven's gained one amazing cook today January 25th, 2020. My grandmother Luz Esperanza Grootonk-Calvillo.

Now she could throw an Easter party or Christmas party for the family like no other. 138 E. Paisley Street will always be remembered in a many of brains with it's wonderfully delicious orange tree (orange marmalade) and plum tree (plum jam)in the back yard. OH and don't forget the avocado tree too ( I hear Calvillo's have a knack for growing them). I remember how she would tell my mom and dad when it was grunion season. Good gosh we would have to get up in the wee hours of the morning, pick up grandma and go to the ocean. And there we were with our buckets ready to catch them before the tides took them back in. All the times of taking her fishing on the piers....And let's not forget her most favorite past time, slot machines. She could pull a slot machine handle like no other. That woman could be in worlds record book for never leaving a machine!! Not even to go to the restroom or eat. Her butt was clued to the seat when she found the machine she loved. Grandma made a many crochet baby blankets. Both my girls still have theirs. A crochet hook had nothing on her. This was something she took after from her momma, Ygnacia Aza-Grootonk. A woman of many, many talents. But don't let those talents fool you, she was one stubborn woman. Had to always be right about everything, A true definition to the word fighter too. I believe you might be able to see her picture under both stubborn and fighter in the dictionary. When she spoke she was heard. She was the hierarchy of the family and she let it be known. She taught all of us girls to be strong. She was one strong woman.

She was ready to go be the our Lord....I'm at peace knowing she was ready to be there (although my heart is broken). No more nursing home bed for Grandma. She is up and running around heaven giving our family there all our love and hugs....Use those legs Grandma, you got them back!! I know she gave us all the sign of the cross on her way to heaven!! Until then Grandma, I love you dearly....
