SOUTH YARMOUTH -- Mason H. "Mace" Bailey, 85, of South Yarmouth, formerly of Franklin, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at the Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Living Center in South Dennis.
He was the husband of Janet M. (Teare) Bailey.
Born in Nashua, N.H., Mr. Bailey was raised and educated in Nashua and Winchendon. A longtime resident of Franklin, he moved to South Yarmouth in 1988. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was in the invasion of Normandy. After being injured in Europe, he auditioned and was selected to join the Glenn Miller American Jamboree Orchestra as a percussionist. He toured throughout Europe with this group. Mr. Bailey later served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired after 23 years in the military and was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant in 1965. Mr. Bailey then became a maintenance worker for the former Pan American Airways in Boston. An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Bailey coached baseball while in the military and later at the Little League and Babe Ruth levels. He was a past president of the Franklin Gridiron Club and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans in Franklin and on Cape Cod. His greatest passion was spending time with his grandchildren. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Edwin Bailey and his wife, Michelle, of Sandwich; three daughters, Marilyn Rudolph of Woodstock, Conn., Helga Donahue of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Erika Ventura of Rowland Heights, Calif.; four grandchildren, Collin, Carolyn, Mason and Jacqueline of Sandwich; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 2, in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth.(from Milford Daily News, MA)
