Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Major of the 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves, having risen to that rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was badly wounded in the June 1862 Battle of Glendale, the severity of which facilitated his resignation from the Army on December 25, 1862. He was soon commissioned into the Veterans Reserve Corps, serving first as Major of the 22nd VRC, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th VRC. He finished his Union Army service as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General for the state of Rhode Island. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant services in the battles of Mechanicsville, Gaines' Mill, and Charles City Cross Roads, Va., and for faithful and meritorious services during the war". He remained in the Regular Army after the end of the conflict, and retired with the rank of Captain in 1893.
