Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 1st Connecticut Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant conduct at Ashland, Va., June 1, 1864". After the war he became a prominent Congregational clergyman.
