On 5/20/1864 in Fredericksburg, he and 61 other Fredericksburg area citizens were arrested and sent to Ft. Delaware by the U.S. Army and held hostage for the return of 60 Federal troops who had been arrested by civilian authorities as unorderly, armed stragglers. The exchange was finalized a few months later.
Postwar, Charles was a news & periodicals dealer (owned a bookstore) and during the 1870s published "The Recorder" for a couple of years with his brother.
