William H. Clumpner, 88, a former resident of The Dalles, died Aug. 1, 2009, in Milwaukie.

Born in Kellogg, Idaho, he served as a pilot in the Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of Lt. Junior Guard. He spent his enlistment flying PBY's in the Aleutians.

After the war and finishing college, he began his career as a mechanical engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers, which continued until his retirement at age 55. Before moving to Milwaukie and the Division office, he had been involved in the construction of the Grand Coulee, John Day and McNary Dams and was head of The Dalles Dam in the 1960's. But he never lost his love of flying and after raising a family he took it up again and continued until he was 80.

He is survived by his wife Billie and his daughters and their spouses, Leslie Bindschadler, Joey and Dave Kelso, Jan and Fabe Ramirez; and by his sons and their spouses, Bill Clumpner and Karen Quigley, Dave and Patty Clumpner. He had eight grandchildren: Shawn and Brendan Kelso, Kristen Gomez, Alex, Reed and Jenna Clumpner and John and Mark Ramirez. He also had four step-children and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia and his brothers Al, Eugene, Ed and Ben.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at Christ the King Church in Milwaukie.
