Clara Curtis, youngest child of Lorin Lyon and Esther Amelia (Gillett) Curtis was born in Wright County, Missouri near Norwood. She married Elisha George Purtle at age of 21 years on November 23rd, 1890. The couple had four daughters, Alma Althea, Lutie Florence, Irma Rebecca and Marjorie Monte Purtle. Clara was adept at most any task and especially loved sewing beautiful dresses for her daughters. In spite of a fulfilling life with a loving family, Clara and Elisha had their share of heartache along the way. One or two children died in infancy and, indeed, Clara herself died during childbirth on Christmas Eve, 1908. She and her newborn baby were buried in the same coffin in the Curtis Cemetery near Norwood in Wright County. The exact location is now unknown as a small fieldstone was the only marker and it was not engraved. A few small stones are visable near her parents graves and it's likely that her's is one of those.
