'John Doe' left to rest in peace
PUYALLUP, Wash. (AP) - More than a decade after his death, "John Doe" has been identified, but not for the public.
The young man died after plunging over a 75-foot waterwall during a rock concert at Flying M Ranch near Eatonville. That was in 1970.
Now, the Pierce County coroner's office says it knows the victim's name, but cannot release it because members of his family insist it not be revealed.
"Officially, he's still John Doe," said Bud White, admnistrative officer for the coroner's office. "We can't list any other name for him."
He said that only in private conversation will the Missoula, Mont., family admit the dead man is their missing son.
Identification finally was made last September when the parents traveled to Tacoma in their 12-year quest to find out what happened to their son. The mother viewed pictures but was uncertain.
Then, the coroner's spokesman said, it was learned the son had been arrested on a drug matter two days before the rock festival, and positive identification was made the next day when Bellevue, Wash., officials matched John Doe's fingerprints with those on their booking sheet.
The identification was not revealed then because the parents asked that the matter be ended quietly.
A news reporter, interviewing authorities on a "Jane Doe" story, came on the John Doe identification matter.
The family of John Doe said they wanted his body left in Puyallup's Woodbine Cemetery under a headstone inscribed "A young man known but to God," the coroner's office said.
