John H. Bailey II, 92, of Lovington passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 11:15 p.m. in Mason Point, Sullivan.

Open graveside services will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 in Keller Cemetery, Lovington. Memorials may be made to the Prairie View Baptist Church, Lake City; Lovington Christian Church or Lovington Ambulance.

John was born May 23, 1918, in Lovington to Everett and Leta (Hudson) Bailey. He had just celebrated his 92nd birthday. He married Dorcas Ann Devine March 4, 1939. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Dorcas Ann; son John H. Bailey III ; daughter's Jill Bailey Landers and husband Charles Landers, Gretchen Morrison and husband Will Morrison and Marcia Farmer; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

John had a truly unforgettable nature: John never met a stranger and he enjoyed talking to everyone. His lifelong vocation was his farming operation and his passion for raising prize-winning Hereford cattle. With the help of his children and wife, that passion created many winning ribbons and trophies at county fairs and the Illinois State Fair. While John's son Johnny managed the farming operation in his later years, John still maintained a small cattle herd and spent time doing what he did best - work; mowing, bailing hay, feeding the cattle herd, pestering his friends at the elevator and razzing his friends at his favorite Decatur gym. The routine of going to the gym, lifting weights and chatting with his friends, while Dorcas dutifully waited in the lobby of the gym, kept John fit long after many his age had sunken into their couch - a place John never spent much time. While everyone who had contact with John may not remember him by name, they do remember him by his unique, sharp-witted persona. God broke the genetic mold after He created John. His family will miss him dearly.
