Leonard Rebenitsch, 86, died Nov. 23, 2003, at his home in Fort Rice. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Rice.

Leonard was born to John and Theresa (Balkowitsch) Rebenitsch in Fort Rice, N.D., Feb. 7, 1917, and was the youngest of 12 children. He served in the army for 3 1/2 years from 1942 to 1946. The army trained him as a veterinarian in Colorado, and he was stationed in Puerto Rico teaching English to Puerto Rican soldiers. On Feb 25, 1946, he married Lucy Miller of St. Anthony. They were married for 57 years.

He taught school for 13 years, along with farming and ranching. In 1953, after multiple tornadoes struck the area, Leonard and Lucy moved to Bismarck to raise their family. They returned to the ranch in 1970. In addition to ranching, Leonard worked as a radio dispatcher for ND State Radio, and the Bismarck Police Dept., before retiring in 1982. His favorite hobbies were hunting, reading and crossword puzzles.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Lucy; and his children, Mary Ellen Rebenitsch, Karen (Leo) Reisenauer, Lenore (Matt) Kuntz, Ron (Stephanie) Rebenitsch and Dale (Audrey)Rebenitsch; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters-in-law, Mary, Evelyn and Vivian Rebenitsch; and numerous nieces and nephews. Quilting Club which created and donated many quilts to charity, family and friends.

Lucy and Leonard were married for 57 years until Leonard passed away in 2003.

Lucy is survived by five children, Mary Ellen Rebenitsch, Mandan, Karen (Leo) Reisenauer, St. Anthony, Lenore (Matt) Kuntz, Ft Rice, Ron (Stephanie) Rebenitsch, Bismarck, and Dale (Audrey) Rebenitsch, Fort Rice; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Theresa Mann; one sister-in-law, Hildegard Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
