Arnold Bendish, 65, Fort Rice, died peacefully May 16, 2006, at a Bismarck hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Rice.

Arnold was born July 25, 1940, the son of John and Anna (Rebenitsch) Bendish. He attended grade school in Fort Rice and graduated from St. Mary's High School, Bismarck. Before ranching full-time, Arnold worked for the State Radio. On Jan. 20, 1968, Arnold was joined in marriage to his bride, Sharon Stewart. He and Sharon moved to the Cannon Ball Ranch in the spring of 1970. In 1978, they moved up to the family ranch in Fort Rice. Arnold's love for ranching was instilled in him at a young age. This passion was passed on to his wife and three sons. Spending time with his horses, livestock and dogs were among his most treasured pastimes. A couple of weeks ago, he lost a good friend, his favorite border collie, Sage. Team roping, fishing and hunting were also hobbies that Arnold frequently enjoyed. A recent highlight was an elk hunt in Colorado which created countless memorable moments.

Arnold will forever be remembered as an honest, kind and gentle man. He spoke quietly but when he spoke, everybody heard what he had to say. Arnold was often relied upon for information and help about horses, dogs, cattle and roping. He made it a priority to take time out for whoever needed help.

Arnold was a local brand inspector for the North Dakota Stockman's Association.

Although Arnold's ranch was a significant part of his life, his family always came first. His grandchildren's feet never touched the ground when they were around grandpa. He adored his grandchildren and cherished their special times together, going fishing and giving tractor and horse rides.

Arnold, our dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his wife, Sharon; three sons and daughters-in-law, John (Angela) and James (Tara), both of Rifle, Colo., and Jody (Amanda), Fort Rice; three grandchildren, Madison, Bailey and Chance Bendish; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard (Mary), Fort Rice; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes (Harley) Jennings, Washburn, Gladys (Alton) Bauer, Herreid, S.D., Carol (Don) Hatzenbuhler, Solen, and Rita (Gordon) Cermak, Beulah; and special family friends, Bill and Lisa Potter and Joe and Elizabeth Orzolek.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
