Capt. David Meriwether, sometimes known as "Sailor David" in family genealogies, was born in Virginia but lived in England while a sailing master, the last few years on the York sailing between Bristol, England, and Virginia. He married Mary Weaver in 1743 in Herfordshire, England, and they had seven known children: James (died in infancy), Jenny (stayed in England), Elizabeth Mariah, Thomas, James, David and William. All but the first James and Jenny moved to America at some point.

David died at sea aboard the York, seven days out of York Town, Virginia, enroute to Bristol, England, and was buried at sea.
