Nicholas was the third son of David Meriwether and Anne Holmes. He served as a Colonel on the staff of Major General Edward Braddock in the French & Indian Wars. In June, 1755, the general was mortally wounded near Ft. Duquesne, near present day Pittsburg, and reportedly fell into Col. Meriwether's arms. Upon Nicholas' return, General Braddock's sister, Lady Braddock, presented Col. Meriwether with a scarlet coat embroidered in gold as a token of regard. A nephew of Col. Nicholas, Nicholas Meriwether (1736-1772), the son of Thomas Meriwether & Elizabeth Thornton, was also present at the battle and for many years his descendants mistakenly thought he was the recipient of the coat.

Nicholas married Frances Morton about 1740 and they had at least eight children. After his death in 1758, she married Dr. Samuel Pryor and had one son by him.

Note: The original creator of this Memorial claims that Nicholas Meriwether and his wife, Frances Morton, are buried in the Payne Family Cemetery in King George County. As neither ever lived in or even near King George County, it seems far more likely they were buried in one of the Meriwether family burial grounds in the counties of Louisa, Albemarle or, most likely, Goochland, where Nicholas died.
