On 5 Jan 1842, Richard married Elizabeth "Luisa" Yancey in Campbell, GA (now Fulton County). They had 11 children.
In 1862, while in his 40s, Richard joined the CSA along with his eldest son in Polk, GA. They served in Capt. King's GA Light Artillery, which became part of the 14th Battalion.
In 1863, Richard served in the 2nd BN, AL Light Artillery. His two eldest sons joined the GA INF where one was killed in action at the Battle of Chickamauga.
