Charlie Lindsay Beck, 94, of Lexington, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the Henry Etta and Bruce Hinkle Hospice House.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Jersey Baptist Church by Dr. Michael Collier and the Rev. Thomas Allen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Piedmont Funeral Home.

Charlie was a member of Jersey Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class and a former deacon. He was born May 10, 1916, in Davidson County to Lindsay and Mary Snider Beck and grew up in the Churchland area. Charlie and Inez Yarbrough were married April 11, 1936. They were married almost 70 years when she passed away in 2005. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Claude, Fred, Arthur and Frank; and three sisters, Tessie Michael, Minnie Carter and Willie Mae Grubb.

Charlie is survived by many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a special niece and goddaughter, Brenda Penninger and her husband, Glenn. Brenda's four sons and their families were a special blessing to Charlie.

Charlie served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 80th Infantry Division. He was with the Anti-tank Platoon and was discharged in 1946 as a staff sergeant. Charlie was a life-time member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS and Disabled Veterans. Charlie was honored to be the grand marshal in the 2010 Veterans Day Parade. He enjoyed waving to the crowd and riding in the bright yellow convertible. He was also asked to make a bronze cast of his hands that will be displayed at the North Carolina Veterans Park in Fayetteville.
