James was the son of James C. Johnson and Jessie Lee Smith Johnson. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He was formerly a Construction Worker with Godfrey Mechanical of Warner Robins, Georgia. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Bonaire, Georgia.
He was married to Bessie Durham Johnson.
