THE COLUMBIAN
Sept. 24, 1890
Her death was not all together unexpected as she was in feeble health for several weeks before she was confined to bed. She bore her afflictions with remarkable patience and fortitude conscious that the time was growing near when The Great Creator would take her home. When fifteen years of age, she united herself with Antioch Baptist Church and lived as a consistent member up to the time she died, 63 years and was ever ready to do anything in her power for her Master's Cause. On Dec. 27, 1828, she was married to John Applewhite and during their happy but short journey in life together only four years, they were blessed with two children. One of which is yet living. After her husband's death she remained a widow a little over a year, then married to Hugh Fortenberry, who is still living on the old homestead. She was the mother of eight Fortenberry children. All are living except one.She lived to see quite a number of her great grand children. She said she did not fear death and told her children not to grieve after her and she was going to her home in heaven. Grandmaw Fortenberry as she was familiarly known, was an old landmark but has now crossed the river from whence no travelers return. Her aged husband the stay in comfort for declining years deeply mourning her loss. The children who are now fighting the battle now realize what it is to be without a mother. Yes this faithful and dear old mother is gone and now let us all strive to meet her in a land that
is fairer than this, a home of eternal happiness and rest.

Her mother was Nancy Lewis Lee not sure where she is buried.
