Again the angel of death has called at Arcata, and this time Jas. C. Hanna, of that place, a young man well known and universally esteemed throughout the county, is the victim. Mr. Hanna has been sick for several weeks, and the disease finally merged into typhoid-pneumonia. In the early part of the present week it was hoped that he might rally, but the disease had taken too deep hold on his system, and early on the morning of May 23d his spirit winged its flight. The announcement was received with sadness by a large circle of friends and Brother Pioneers who had been associated with him since the early history of the county. The action of the Pioneers yesterday will be found in another column. Further reference to the departed will be made at the proper time.

DIED.

HANNA-- At Arcata, Humboldt co., May 23d, of typhoid -pneumonia, James C. Hanna, native of Philadelphia, aged about 37 years. The funeral will take place at Arcata on Friday, May 26th (hour to he announced tomorrow morning) under the direction of the Masonic Order Friends and acquaintances of deceased, and of the family are invited to attend.

Humboldt Times, Volume XIX, Number 124, 26 May 1883

There was a very large attendance at the funeral of the late James C. Hanna, in Arcata, yesterday—the largest it is said that ever assembled on a like occasion in that town. The day wan excessively warm, the thermometer standing at 80 in the shade at noon. and not a breath of air stirring. All the stores and business houses were closed, and there seemed to be a general turn out of the people. Besides the committee of twelve representing the Pioneer Society from this city, quite a number of Masons from Humboldt Lodge, F. and A. M., and several ladies went up on the morning boat, and many went around the bay. The funeral was conducted by Arcata Lodge. F. and A M., followed by the delegation of Pioneers from this city, being joined by some members of that Society from Arcata. Short services were held at the house by the Rev. Mr. Todd, the final service at the grave being the impressive funeral rites of the Masonic Order. Perhaps no man ever died in Arcata whose loss is more universally deplored than that of deceased. In the prime of life, in the vigor of his usefulness, beloved by all, he has passed away. May the God who tempers the wind to the shorn lamb shield his heart-broken widow and three fatherless little ones, is the prayer of all who knew James C Hanna.
