William Patterson Hanna enlisted as a First Sergeant at Eureka, California, April 18, 1863, and was mustered into Company A, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers. He was promoted to Sergeant Major September 1, 1863, and transferred to Field & Staff, same regiment. Sergeant Major Hanna was mustered out at Fort Humboldt, California, June 14, 1865. After the war he returned to Eureka where he was an active member of the Volunteer Fire Department for 53 years. William filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Eureka April 21, 1904, and received application No. 1,313,247 and certificate No. 1,086,606. He refiled for his pension March 1, 1907. In recognition of his service, Company 2, Eureka VFD, provided the marker for his grave.
