Joseph was one of fifteen children of Joseph & Hannah [Glover} Gilpin.

His paternal grandparents were Thomas & Joan [Bartholomew] Gilpin. The maternal grandparents were George & Alice [Lamboll] Glover.

Joseph married Mary Caldwell Dec 17, 1729. She was one of three know children of Vincent & Betty [Pierce] Caldwell. (Mary's sister Ruth m. George Gilpin.)

Joseph and Mary settled in Birmingham where the had and raised their children. In 1761 the removed to the vicinity of Wilmington.

The couple's known children were:

1. Ruth, 1730-1751, m. Daniel Stubbs
2. Vincent, 1732-1810, m. Abigail Woodward
3. Orpha, 1734-1806, m. Jos. Shallcross, 4 ch
4. Nun, 1736- died as child
5. Gideon, 1738-1825, m. Sarah Gregg
6. Israel, 1740-1834
7. Betty, 1742-unk, m. Wm. Cleaney
8. Joseph, 1744-unk
9. Hannah, 1746-1823, m. John Grubb
10. Joseph, 1748-1826,

Per the book "Our Kindred: The McFarland and Stern families, of Chester County, PA, and ... which has an extensive history about the Gilpin family, Joseph was "interred in Friends' Ground Wilmington".
