Funeral services for Kathryn McNeel Eddins, 82, were held on Tuesday, Dec 12, in the Afton 4th Ward Chapel.
Kathryn McNeel Eddins was born to Emma Rund and William Lloyd McNeel in Afton on Jan 7, 1913, the fifth of 11 children. Her father and mother had homesteaded a ranch near Etna so her childhood was filled with the tasks of ranching and living with lots of brothers and sisters.
Kathryn was a good student and graduated from Star Valley High School in 1930. This was no easy task during the depression years. she moved to Afton, boarded and did housework for Mrs Barrus so that she could attend high school.
LaVell Gilby Eddins and Kathryn were married in Paris ID on Nov 1, 1930. They operated a ranch in the Narrows that Albert Eddins had homesteaded. During the depression years, life was not easy in the ranching business.
Two sons were born during the early years on the ranch. Neil was born Dec 22, 1931 and Boyd was born Aug 4, 1933. Kathryn milked cows, cleared willows, drove the power buckrake to put up hay, cooked and baked for everyone, camped up Greys river and danced.
she and LaVell were expert square dancers and attended dances over many years, traveling all over the country square dancing.
In 1946 the family which now included Lael, born on Dec 4, 1944, moved to Afton and took over the cabins and school store on the corner of Fourth and Jefferson across from Star Valley High School.
This move launched Kathryn into her years as an outstanding business woman. She and LaVell built a new store on the corner which she ran for 27 years.
She would get up before 5 a.m. to prepare her famous cream pies, chili and hamburger soup. Not only did Kathryn feed the hungry stomachs of about 3,000 kids and teachers over the years, she also kidded with everyone and made everyone toe the mark and behave appropriately. She never owned an adding machine, but did all of the figuring very accurately in her head. The School Store was home away from home for many teenagers since there were no activity buses in those days.
She and LaVell were avid supporeters of the high school activities, attended all of the games especailly when Lael was playing on the teams.
When little grandkids came into her life, she generously clothed them, fed them goodies and played with them. She was their best friend. She loved to camp and would take the grandchcildren and camp for a week at a time at Cottonwood Lake.
After the school store was sold in 1972 she went to work at Strebel's Variety Store. She could figure the price on yardage of fabrics and deal with fractions in her head.
Her life changed greatly when LaVell died on Jan 31, 1989. she carried on the traditions she loved and kept a neat home filling her life with family and friends. A memorable trip she took was to Alaska to visit her sister, Ann Sneed.
She loved the LDS Church and worked many years as a Sunday School teacher, served in the stake MIA presidency and was active in the Relief Society most recently as the telephone calling coordinator and delivered birthday wishes to the women of the ward. One of the highlights of her later life was attending the temple and being sealed to LaVall in March 1990.
The last week of her life was exemplary of what she loved doing. She was busy getting everyone a Christmas gift, making the goodies, decorating her house and composing her annual Christmas letter.
On Wednesday Dec 6, 1995, she had a car accident near Nield Market. Her nose hit the steering wheel. Over the next two days even though she was getting her broken nose repaired she continued to plan for the upcoming holidays and what she wanted to do. She died peacefully in her sleep in her home with Lael taking care of her on Friday, Dec 6 at about 6:30 p.m.
Kathryn left a legacy of generosity hard work, friendliness, frugality, faithfulness and fun.
She is survived by her three sons, Neil, Boyd and Lael; two brothers, Frank and Bob McNeel; three sisters Margaret Davis, Pauline Rainey and Ann Sneed; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
