Born on the #9 farm at Meerbeck in Schaumburg-Lippe Germany, he was baptized on March 28, 1864 in Meerbeck at the St. Bartholomäus Evangelical Lutheran Church (located across the street from his house). William had just turned 5 when his parents sold their land and headed to America for better opportunities hopes for a better life. They settled in Will County (Will twp), Illinois, and William was confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church there on 25 Mar 1877. The family then moved to Saline County, Nebraska in about 1878. He helped on the family farm and, on 21 Jan 1892 at the Zion Lutheran Church which his father had helped found, he married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Otto. They had six children, the second child, Elizabeth, died just before her first birthday and is buried also in this cemetery. Another daughter, Helena (not sure of spelling, but she was called "Lena") died at the age of a year and a half and also is buried in this cemetery. William's home was struck by lightning a couple of months before he died, and the lightning went through him, leaving permanent damage from which he ultimately passed away. He left his mother, his wife, and four children (Herman, Otto, Adolph and Laura). Five years after his death, his widow re-married, to Henry Carl Kleinemeier.
