The second child of five, born to Rebecca E. Newton and Moses Canada Freeman. Other children were Maude, Velma Lois, Benjamin Frank and John. Walter was born in Rea Valley or Onset, as it was called in those days. He was eight years old when the family moved to near Advance in Baxter County. He was stationed in France while serving in WWI. During the war he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart, the two Oak Leaf Cluster Medal, along with several other Medals. Upon his return, he settled on a farm south and west of Calico Rock in Baxter County and married Susan Martin. They had two sons, Roy William Freeman, born in 1922, and Troy Canada Freeman born in 1925. After Susan's death, following Troy's birth, he married Alice Seawright. To this union were born six children, all survivors, Marie Freeman, Martin,(A.B.)( Beavers,(Garland); Winona Freeman Smith (Floyd Jr.); Norma Freeman Quinn (Erby); Mary Lou Freeman Yoder (Arlin); Claude Freeman (Annamae Lawson); and Ruth Freeman Mize (Kenneth) Franklin (Gary). Survivors include grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A step-son, Royce Seawright, is deceased.
