"Wiliam John Charles Hastings was the son of John H. Hastings and Mary McKinney, both of whom were born in County Antrim, Ireland. He was, however, born 25 October 1864 in Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan.

He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Frazer in Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan on March 20, 1889. They had the following children: Ella I., John Frazer, Bernard McKinney, James Mosher, Adelbert, and Robert.
