492nd/856th B-24 bomber pilot who was KIA during World War II a few weeks after D-Day in 1944. David grew up in downtown North Little Rock and very much enjoyed his friends, neighborhood, and the old house where he grew up at – 708 Magnolia Street. He was raised by his paternal grandparents the late Nellie Hallibution (Kumpe) Kaufman and the late Seymour Core Kaufman of North Little Rock. Both grandparents are buried at Oakland Cemetery in Little Rock. He attended Fourth Street Elementary and Argenta Elementary Schools. He was also a 1959 graduate of North Little Rock High School. He then attended Little Rock University (now UALR) where he graduated in 1963. He also achieved a Master's Degree in education from the University of Arkansas in 1979.
David was a lifelong public school teacher and scholar of history and aviation. He taught social studies at Northeast High School in North Little Rock and later back to North Little Rock High School West Campus to finish up his teaching career. He retired in 2005 after achieving 38 years in teaching – 35 wonderful years in the North Little Rock School District.
David met Edith Elizabeth Knight of North Little Rock in 1965 and they were married on August 5, 1968. They enjoyed a wonderful life together in downtown North Little Rock and later on to Park Hill. His only son is Scott David Kaufman of North Little Rock. His daughter in law is Sharon Elizabeth Kaufman. He has two grandchildren: Ethan Richard Kaufman age 12 and Lauren Elizabeth Kaufman age 10 of North Little Rock.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2011, at Roller-Owens Funeral Home Chapel (501-791-7400) with Brother Robert Wirges officiating. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 30, at the funeral home.
