Alva was likely the son of James and Nancy Jenkins Silverthorn. Perhaps the foster son if Hiram and Isabella (Silverthorn) Hale. After Nancy's death James appears to have left behind his children in Erie county to be brought up by other members of the family and to have married again in Brantford, Ontario on 1 Feb 1829.

Alva married first, Caroline L. they were separated or divorced by 1860.

His children by Caroline L.: Sarah I., Amander, Harriet J., Charles Lafayette and John Wesley were put out as foster children while very young.

Second marriage, April 7, 1862, was to Mrs. Caroline Douglas. Their children: William Douglas (by her 1st husband) and Mary Rosilla Silverthorn (Ca. 1867- before 1899).
