(Feb. 22) CHADRON - Natalie Porras Martin, beloved wife, mother, sister and teacher, died after a lengthy illness in Chadron, on Friday, Feb. 18. She was 81. She was born to Yrineo Porras and Eusebia Lopez in Martindale, Texas. She spent her early childhood living on a farm embraced by a loving, extended family, which included her three brothers, a sister, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. In the 1920's, her family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she grew to be a beautiful young lady who excelled in sports, homemaking, academics and dance. She was good at softball that her nickname was "Babe Ruth." Natalie was very sociable and had many friends. In 1941, she and Albert Martin of Whitney met and fell in love; and on Jan. 26, 1942, they were married. They had four daughters: Theresa Anne (deceased), Marlena, Elizabeth and Mary Louise. She was a devoted wife and mother. Her children learned about God, social responsibility and the ABC's at her knee. When times were lean, she worked as a waitress, a cook and a seamstress. She took pride in everything she did.
In the 1960's she attended Chadron State College and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Masters Degree. She taught junior and high school Spanish, French and English. She cared a great deal about her students and spent quality time with them, encouraging them to explore their potential. After twenty years of teaching, she retired from Chadron high School and was showered with tributes from her colleagues and students. In her retirement years she remained active in civic affairs; served as a Spanish translator; tutored persons seeking their GED; and continued to enjoy sewing, gardening and dancing, She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick's Parish. She also was a member of the Chadron State college Alumnae Association, the Nebraska State Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the American Legion Auxiliary and other civic and social organizations. She is survived by her husband, Albert Luevano Martin of Chadron; three daughters, Marlena Richardson of Boston, Mass., Elizabeth Sanchez of Chadron, Mary King of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Erminia Porras of Kansas City, Kansas; two brothers, Moses Porras of Kansas City, Missouri and Benito Porras of Kansas City, Kansas. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Ed Cortney officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Chadron. A wake service will be held Monday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
She will be remembered with respect and affection by her family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and students.
