MASON CITY — Lawrence "Perry" Hull Sr., 75, of Mason City, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 of pancreatic cancer at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 27, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Craig E Steimel officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 26, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Perry was born the fourth of seven children on Sept. 24, 1935, to Benjamin F. Hull and Adeline (Goodman) Hull.

He graduated from Garner High School in 1955, were he was active in sports and band.

Perry joined the Navy (as his father had) in 1955 and received an honorable discharge in 1959.

He attended one year at Mason City Junior College where he met Maxine Schultz, and then married on June 4th, 1960.

He was blessed with six children: L. Perry Hull Jr., of Mason City, Dr. Nathan M. Hull, of Urbandale, Margo M. Hull-Saunders, of Cave Creek, Ariz., twins Mary and Joseph and Morgan J. Hull of Rochester, Minn.

The majority of his employment was dedicated to Lehigh Portland Cement Co., where he performed Quality Control Lab work for 35 years.

His interests included feeding the song birds and crows, performing his magic coin trick for children, traveling through the U.S. during his annual camping trips with his family, and eventually, world travel with his wife. Wherever he went, he brought out the smiles in those he met.

He was known by many in town throughout his life for his daily bike rides with his dog at his side. He also enjoyed taking rides with his grandchildren.

He had always enjoyed wood working, and of all the incredible items he had created or restored, he always talked of a recent piece of scrap wood he turned into a beautiful hand rail. He always enjoyed the feel of the finished pieces.

Perry enjoyed the past 13 years of retirement by traveling the world, playing cards and games with friends and family, volunteering at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and at the voting poles, fund raising for Cancer Relay For Life, playing his tuba with the New Horizon Band, volunteering at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, and with great passion, visiting his children and grandchildren for all the special occasions. It was with great regret that he was not going to be able to see all his grandchildren grow to adulthood.

He always had time to help anyone who needed it and had been considered a father to, and loved by, many more than just his four children.

He is survived by his wife Maxine Hull; children: Perry, Nathan (wife Paula and children Abby and Katherine), Margo (and husband Richard), Morgan (wife Amy and children Rebekah, Emma, Virginia and Benjamin); sisters: Vivian (Bob) McEldoon, Ivah Johnson, Iris Craig and Nellie (Bruce) Mastin; and sister-in-lawm Joanne (Ivan) Hull. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his twin children Mary and Joseph, his parents, and brother Ivan Hull.
