Chico Enterprise Record, Wednesday, June 4, 1986: Durham (E-R) --- Graveside services for Carl Eugene Cole, 63, of Durham will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Glen Oaks Memorial Park in Chico. He died Monday in his home.
"Cole was born Dec. 1, 1922, to Harlan and Florence Cole in Durham, where he was educated. In 1941, he joined the Marines and served in the military for 12 years during two separate enlistments. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned to Durham after the war and worked for Diamond Match and Diamond Lumber, moving to Maxwell for two years with the company and then back to Durham.
"He re-enlisted in the Marines during the Korean War. He also served in the Vietnam War. He returned to Durham when he left the military, going back to work for Diamond Match. He later worked for Fred Rabo --- and was employed with him at the time of his death.
"Survivors include a brother, James Norman Cole of Chico; a half-brother, Bill Page of Paradise, and numerous cousins in the area...." [end]
"According to the funeral service notes provided by Rev. James Patterson (Ret.) of the Durham United Methodist Church, Carl saw combat duty in the South Pacific during World War II. He received awards for his military service, including three separate honorable discharges.
"Carl raised pheasants, quail, chickens, rabbits, homing pigeons, and at one time even brought home a baby fawn. Carl discovered it on a ranch where he was working. When the mother doe did not return after two days, Carl took the fawn home and raised it. After a few months, Carl had a growing deer on his hands and knew he couldn't keep it in Durham. So he arranged for its release on a game preserve, and said it was one of the hardest things he had ever done.
"Carl was obviously a tender hearted person, and was known to the community as a kind and gentle person. His grandfather, Luman Cole was once a United Brethren Minister and served as pastor of the church in Durham.
"We thank God for the life of Carl Cole, lifelong resident of Durham. Carl was a Marine who fought for his country ---a steady worker, bird raiser, animal lover -- a quiet neighbor and responsible citizen."
