Joseph was born in Sheburne, Chenango County New York he was most likely living with his parents and siblings in Richland just south of Sackets Harbor when he went to sign up for the military in 1829. He signed up for service in the Army for a period of 5 years and was assigned to New York's 2nd infantry, "H" company. Sometime prior to 1835 Joseph met and married Chloe Jane Frary from Vermont. Joseph had a nickname for Chloe, "Lady Jane". Lady Jane also gave him a nickname, Col. Joe, not sure if that meant that he ended his military career as a colonel or it was simply a nickname he acquired.
From 1836 to 1840 it appears the family was living in Arkwright, Chautauqua, New York. Anne, Lydia and Abigail were all born in Arkwright. Then sometime prior to 1842 they moved to Lansing Michigan. In 1842 their next daughter, Jane then 4 more daughters and their only son Joseph Jr., were all born in Lansing Michigan.
Joseph Sr. was a pioneer of Lansing Michigan. He was a business and property owner. He was a cooper as well as a Doctor of botanical healing and an amateur photographer. He loved drilling his girls in the arts of the military! His description in the books about him was that he was about 5 ft 10 in and thin, walked very quick, upright and agile. He would gather with his colleagues and mates, in the square as well as in other establishments to talk about current events and public matters, he had a quick humor. He was engaged in community affairs. He was a beloved character in town and was even memorialized in a book on the Lansing Pioneers I found online.
In later years Joseph and Chloe went to live with Joseph Jr. and his wife Mary St Clair-Moon. Joseph and Mary were living in the Tompkins/Springport, Michigan area on Springport rd. when Joseph Sr. died in 1889. Joseph Sr. is buried in Fairview Cemetery just down the road from where he was living with his family at the time of his death. Chloe continued to live with Joseph and Mary until her death in 1903. Chloe was buried next to her husband in Fairview Cemetery. Also buried next to them is their son Joseph Jr and his wife Mary St. Clair-Moon. All 4 of their stones were deteriorating and our current families took up a "Moonstone" collection and put up new memorials for these 4 precious great grand parents to honor them and so their memories and our history will not be lost for our children and grand children and future generations. The St Clair family has an amazing family history associated to the Rosland chapel in Scotland and even the English Thorn! and the Frary family has a direct connection to our founding fathers as well as the Mayflower!
