Bert Schwab, youngest child of Melissa Whitaker and Philip Schwab, was born on his fathers' homestead two miles west of Exeter, Neb., on may 18, 1891. He passed away on May 5, 1974, at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Lincoln after a lengthy period of hospitialization. Bert had reached the age of 82 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

On February 9, 1916, he was united in marriage to Ruth Griffee at Hastings, Neb. They began married life on the Schwab farm where they continued to live until December, 1972, when they retired from farming and cattle feeding to their new home in Exeter. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in February 1966.

Bert was always interested in civic and community activities. He was a member of the Exeter Lion's club, a charter member of the Exeter Feeder's and Breeder's association, and a long time member of the Fillmore County Fair Board.

Bert was very interested in 4-H and FFA, and his greatest joy was attending the county fair each year and visiting with the young people. He received the Pioneer Shipper award in 1968 for 50 years of continuous patronage and loyal support to the Omaha Livestock Market.

In 1972 Bert and Ruth received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm award in recognition of 100 years of ownership of the family farm.

Bert is the last of the children of Philip Schwab, having been preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and a host of friends.

Services were held on May 8, 1974, at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter with Rev. Robert Peters officiating. Burial was in the Exeter Cemetry. Mrs. Ed Mitchell accompanied Robert Rhodes, who sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "How Great Thou Art."

Pallbearers were Jun Leif, Ralph Coates, Phil Schwab, Arnold Geiger, John C. Miller and Dick Manning.
