U.S. Continental Congressman, Georgia Governor. He graduated from Yale College, in 1761, studied medicine and proceeded to practice medicine in Liberty County, Georgia, in 1764. He was a member of the Provincial Congress in 1775 and served as a Surgeon in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1776, he was elected a member of the First Continental Congress, serving until 1777. In 1781, he was unanimously elected speaker of the Georgia Assembly, which then appointed him Governor of Georgia, serving until 1782. During his brief term in office, he set out to secure Georgia, against the machinations of public and private enemies, plus took measures designed to restore peace, tranquility and prosperity to the state. His public service continued after his term as governor, he was appointed deputy purveyor for southern hospitals in 1782 and was a member of the Georgia House of Assembly, in 1788. He was a delegate to the State convention to ratify the Federal Constitution, in 1788 and president of the Georgia State Senate, (1789-91). He died on his plantation at age of 53.
