By 1785 most of the descendants of Gideon Hoxie (including Abner's parents) had moved into Maine and western Massachusetts from Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.

"There on a rise of ground called "Hoxie Hill" (in the central part of Maine), one can look north to see Mount Katahdia..The three Hoxie boys and three sisters (Allen and Olivia Hoxie's children) had enjoyed that view many times since their father had cleared a hilltop meadow out of the forest.
In 1850 Allen and his youngest son, Silas set out for California...Finally in California, they panned gold diligently for several months and saved enough to buy ship passage back to Maine via Panama....Once back in their home cluster of houses on Hoxie Hill (Maine) with it's family burial plot, there was a chance to swap stories with others who had traveled west.
One such traveler was Allen's brother Abner. We do not know how the brothers trips or correspondence overlapped, however it is recorded on Abner's grave stone that he came home in May 1854 and died 4 days later.
I visited the graves in 1949 where his wife Lydia is also buried. She lived to 1877 and it was her granddaughter who showed me the places of Hoxie Hill. This granddaughter, Abbie Pettingil, about 70, came of Abner's branch of the family who stayed on in the Milo area and she showed us their home site a half mile down the road from the cemetery. (Abner-Charles-Frank Daniel-Abbie) Here she lived since girlhood close by the roadside site of Abner's blacksmith shop where wagons and teamsters had stopped a hundred years before while hauling loads to and from the Kahtadin Iron Works...This old story and a half Cape Cod style homestead was sagging badly and soon to be sold for back taxes.
During the years that the Hoxies lived in Maine and Wisconsin they slid back away from their strict Quaker beginnings adhered to in Sandwich, Massachusetts....Back in Massachusetts, the Friends Meeting House of Spring Hill near Sandwich has many white stones in the yard bearing Hoxie names before 1600 and the church bible has their names inscribed."
