Willis was the son of Thomas Hawley Finlayson and Katherine "Kitty" Darfler. His father was a farmer and had served in the Civil War. Willis had an older sister Edith and a younger brother John Logan Finlayson. At some point, his family moved to Wisconsin where his father owned a large farm with several hired hands as seen in the 1910 census. He married Mary Gatons and they were the parents of one child, Mary Virginia Finlayson. In the 1940 U.S. Census (Ward 45, Chicago, IL) he is listed with his wife Mary and daughter Virginia (age 17). Willis died at the age of 79 in Chicago, Illinois. Per his great-grandson he is buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Illinois (not sure which one).
